After graduating in 1942 from high school, he worked as a miner in the zolotopriiske trust "Baikal-gold". From 1943 to 1946 he served in the Soviet army was Senior Staff calculator division artillery regiment, deputy regiment Komsomol organizer. As a student of the Physics Department of Tomsk State University Vladimir Evseevich it becomes in September 1946, and his work in science begins from the very first year. At the Department of Optics and Spectroscopy under the guidance of prof. ON. Prilezhaeva he was a student, he published his first article on the spectral analysis of minerals and ores. Already the first publication attracted the attention of specialists. He graduated from the Tbilisi State University in 1951, graduate school - in 1954. In 1954 he defended his thesis "The intermolecular interaction in the quinone-phenol" for the degree of candidate of physical and mathematical sciences. In 1955-69 he worked in the Siberian Physico-Technical Institute. In 1964 he defended his thesis for the degree of Doctor of Physical and Mathematical Sciences. From 1969 to 1997 - Director, since 1997 - Chief Researcher, Honorary Director of the Institute of Atmospheric Optics SB RAS. In 1970 he was elected a corresponding member of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR, in 1981 - a full member of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR. In 1970-1984 gg. Deputy of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR. In 1976 - delegate of XXV congress of the CPSU in 1981 - delegate of the XXVI Congress KPSS.1979-1992 years. - Chairman of the Presidium of the Tomsk branch of the Siberian Branch of the USSR Academy of Sciences. In 1985 - awarded the title of Hero of Socialist Labour for his great contribution in the development of science, scientific training and in connection with his sixtieth birthday with the award of the Order of Lenin and the gold medal "Hammer and Sickle." Since 1988 - chief editor of the monthly scientific journal RAS "Atmospheric Optics" (1992 - "Atmospheric and Ocean Optics`). Since 1996 - Adviser of the Presidium of Russian Academy of Sciences, since 1999 - Director of the International Research Center for Environmental Physics of the environment and ecology of the Tomsk Scientific Center of the SB RAS.

Major works in the field of optics and physics of the atmosphere. Has developed a number of methods to quantify energy losses waves of optical range in the atmosphere, in particular the absorption and scattering of laser radiation by atmospheric gases and aerosols.

Honorary Doctor of Tomsk State University, Honorary Citizen of Tomsk. Laureate of the State Prize of the USSR, the USSR Council of Ministers Prize, winner of the international award "compass" of the American Society for Maritime Technology, USSR Academy Award winner and the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences. Commander of the Order "Badge of Honor", 2 orders of the Red Banner, Order of the Patriotic War II degree, medals "For Services to the Fatherland" III and II degrees. He was awarded numerous medals. Author of over 700 scientific publications and 30 monographs. He died in June 6, 2003.
