In 1927 he graduated from the University of Oxford. He taught political economy at the University of London. In 1945, elected to Parliament. In 1947-51 he belonged to the government. Since 1955 the leader of the Labour Party since 1957. Vice-Chairman of the Socialist International. He expresses the views of the right wing of the Labour Party. He defended the theory of "democratic socialism" and "class harmony", opposed cooperation with the Communists. In foreign policy, he advocated the recognition of the principles of peaceful coexistence and at the same time to strengthen the aggressive NATO bloc.
