Henry I in German. The election of the king and the relationship with the Duke

Before he died, Conrad, king of the East Franks, makes a truly good deed, persuaded his brother Eberhard to renounce claims to the throne. It is likely the words that puts into the mouth of one of Conrad chroniclers of the time: "We are happy to race are not written, we do not have the proper skill and management - it is endowed with Henry Saxon, and he now depends on the general welfare." He even took Eberhard word that he will give himself to Henry Saxon signs of royal dignity - the sword and the crown of the Frankish kings, the sacred spear and royal purple.

It is important that the Frankish princes were convinced: the future of the Eastern Frankish state belongs to the Saxon dynasty. Attractive personality of Henry completed the work, and representatives from different areas of the nobility soon agreed that they should elect namely Henry. In February, 919 of this election enthusiastic crowd welcomed clicks. Archbishop of Mainz, by origin franc, already preparing for his anointing and coronation, but Henry dodged it, saying: "I dovolnoi what I exalted before all my ancestors and the grace of God and your good will is intended to be called King; and as for the anointing and placing tiara on me, let it be granted with dignity. "

In this rebuke of the newly elected King prelate seen purely Saxon conception of the clergy: Saxon nobility had not yet forgotten the time when all the power was in its hands. Now, however, the spiritual aristocracy sought to share that power with the secular. Whatever it was, significantly one: Church under Henry did not enjoy the effects that it had at Conrad, and the higher clergy was forced to settle for a more modest position when compared with the fallen to her share of the old-Frankish soil. Henry`s views on the duties of the king really different from the views of his predecessor or the Carolingian, who ruled before Conrad. The historian of his house and tribal monk Widukind of Corvey, presents his hero, whom no one dared even to compete in knightly games; friendly at a friendly feast, but never drop or their dignity, and, moreover, an avid hunter. Wisdom, which he attributed, confirmed his 16-year-old happy and successful reign (919- 936). It was the fact that he was able to guess at a glance all the executables and then with quiet persistence sought its target. In this way he was able to assert its position in Saxony, and then the same position and Saxony among other neighboring holdings.

Without much trouble, Henry managed to get the new Duke of Swabia, Burchard, to recognize his royal authority. Clever Duke immediately realized that he was dealing with a clever man and a superior military force, and Henry tried not to bring the case to the extreme. Arnulf of Bavaria forced Henry to proceed to the siege of Regensburg. While Arnulf was dissatisfied with the fact that the "Saxon owns his land", but also resigned and it reserved the right to appoint bishops in the country under his control, which confirmed him king Henry in 921 [Right appointment of bishops only belonged to the king, who ivruchal them crozier] in the same year, he entered into an agreement with the king of the West-Frankish state of the Carolingian dynasty, met with him in Bonn, where he called him "my friend eastern king", and Henry his -. "God`s grace king of the Western francs. " Despite such courtesy, he took advantage of strife in the West, to join Lorraine in Eastern Frankish state: restless and fidgety Duke Gizelbert was subdued and taken prisoner to Henry, who not only did not deprive him of the duchy, and even gave him his daughter in marriage auberge in 928 This was an important step: the German tribes united into one state, which amounted to a coherent whole, despite the fact that had the character of a federation. The fact that Henry found a new, or rather renewed the ducal power, that he did not in vain against this power to the people to waste their strength - is a credit to the state of wisdom Henry.
