Political activity

In the years of study at the University of Budapest seriously studied the works of Marxist theoreticians, participated in the Social Democratic movement in Austria-Hungary and Germany, since 1906 was a member of the Hungarian Social Democratic Party, it belonged to the left wing. He collaborated in the theoretical social-democratic press organs; an active discussion with the ideologist of Austro-Marxism of Otto Bauer about inflation in Austria-Hungary. Before the First World War while supporting a centrist position in the environment of European social democracy, focusing on the works of Karl Kautsky; in 1914 he condemned it as opportunist and stood on the anti-war position of Lenin and Luxemburg.

He participated in the bourgeois-democratic and socialist revolution in Hungary. After the establishment of Soviet power in the country in 1919 - People`s Commissar of Finance, and then the chairman of the Supreme Council of National Economy of the Hungarian Soviet Republic. After her defeat of the troops of Admiral Miklos Horthy he emigrated first to Austria and then - the Soviet Union. In 1920 he joined the Communist Party. From the first years of the Communist International (Comintern) was one of its active members. He met and corresponded with Lenin, was a delegate to the 4, 5, 6 th Congress of the Comintern party plenums of its Executive Committee, which made reports and speeches. In 1922-1927 also worked in the sales office at the Soviet Embassy in Berlin.

In 1927-1947 - Director of the Institute of world economy and world politics (IMHMP) USSR - scientific institution, which, according to the decree of the Central Committee of the CPSU (b) by (1931), became a center of research and development in the world`s economic and political problems. The regular "customers" of the Institute of materials was Stalin, Molotov, the CPSU (b), the People`s Commissars, the Commissariat, Commissariat.

He earned the respect Stalin as first predicted the onset of the global economic crisis of 1929-1933 (when most analysts were certain stabilization of capitalism), and then - its ending (when the Comintern was the dominant view of the imminent collapse of the capitalist system).

Successfully combines research and organizational work in the Academy of Sciences of the USSR: he was a member of the Presidium of the USSR, the chief editor of "World Economy and World Politics" magazine, "The conjuncture of the world economy" and "Problems of China`s policy." In 1939-1946 was academician-secretary of the Department of Economics and Law. In 1945, an expert of the Soviet delegation at the Yalta and Potsdam conferences.

Eugene Varga, along with Nikolai Kondratieff, Nikolai Bukharin and Evgeny Preobrazhensky, is one of the first Soviet economists of the world-famous name. It noted his contribution to the development of economic theory to the study of the major trends of the global capitalist economy (theory and history of economic cycles and crises), the theory of money, agrarian problems, the world economic situation.

In 1946, analyzing the success of Keynesian policies in overcoming the results of the "Great Depression" in his work "The changes in the capitalist economy after the Second World War" raised the temporary easing contradictions of the capitalist system problem with the help of state intervention in the economy (state monopoly capitalism). As a result, in 1947 the activity of Academician Varga and its institutions has been heavily criticized in the party press ( "Bolshevik" magazine). That same year, the decision of Politburo of the CPSU (b) The Institute was liquidated. His leadership has been accused of ideological mistakes and wrong personnel policy (in the framework of the outbreak of the "struggle against cosmopolitanism"). Closing of the Institute was also associated with the tightening of the USSR`s foreign policy in connection with the outbreak of the Cold War, demanded more aggressive critics of the West than the staff IMHMP.
