Age: 66

Place of birth: The Hague

Nationality: Netherlands

Born April 14, 1629 in The Hague. He studied at the universities of Leiden (1645-1647) and Breda. In 1665-1681 he lived in Paris from 1681 - again in The Hague.

His career began as a mathematician Huygens, is strongly influenced by the works of Archimedes and Descartes. His first works are devoted to the classic problems: the theorems of squaring the hyperbole, the ellipse and the circle, the value range. Using an algebraic approach, he was able to clarify the meaning of the number p. In 1657 he wrote a treatise on the calculation when gambling (De ratiociniis in ludo aleae) - one of the first works on probability theory.

Achievement Huygens, immediately brought him fame was the creation of a pendulum clock. The discovery, he said in the book Hours (Horologium, 1658), bears a purely practical character. Theoretical problems of mechanics that are associated with the creation of hours, a scientist devoted the following years. In 1673 in Paris, came out of his fundamental work Swing clock, or on the motion of the pendulum (Horologium oscillatorium, sive de motu pendulorum ad horologia aptato demostrationes geometrica), which not only contained a description of themselves hours, but also considered the motion of heavy bodies on a cycloid, let`s scan and determining the length of the curved lines, solved the problem of determining the center of oscillation of a physical pendulum and its period of oscillation, considered the theorem of centrifugal force, was given a different type of device hours - with a circular pendulum. In another paper presented at the contest in the Royal Society in 1669, Huygens investigated the collision of elastic bodies and brought its laws.

In 1678 Huygens presented to the Paris Academy of Sciences Treatise on light (Trait de la lumi re), setting out he created the wave theory of light. In this theory, the scientist explained the mechanism of propagation of light, reflection, refraction, atmospheric refraction, birefringence; viewed as a form of linz.Tsentralnym point theory is the famous principle of the envelope waves (Huygens principle), a graphical representation of which can be found in any modern textbook of physics. Known and works of applied Huygens: he improved the telescope, in particular a lens, designed eyepiece (Huygens eyepiece), still used today, was the use of the diaphragm. With the help of a telescope he constructed in 1665 he discovered the ring of Saturn and its moon Titan first, to determine the period of its revolution around the planet. First I came to the conclusion that the Earth was flattened near the poles. Huygens died in The Hague on 8 July 1695.
