He graduated from the Faculty of Chemistry Lomonosov Moscow State University (1950-1955 gg.). The scientific activity began at the Institute of Geochemistry and Analytical Chemistry im.V.N.Vernadskogo USSR Academy of Sciences, where from 1955 to 1989, successively was a graduate student, junior researcher, senior researcher, head of laboratory, Deputy Director.
From 1989 to the present time is the director general of the Institute of Inorganic Chemistry of the Russian Academy of Sciences im.N.S.Kurnakova. Concurrently, he works at the Chemistry Department of Moscow State University. Since 1978 is a professor, since 1989 - Head of the Department of Analytical Chemistry. In 1987 he was elected a full member of the Russian Academy of Sciences, and in 1991 - a full member of the Russian Academy of Natural Sciences. He was the president of the Russian Chemical Society (1991-1995 gg.), And the All-Russian ecological-analytical Association (1992-1996 gg.).
Over the years, research activities Yu.A.Zolotov developed numerous methods of chemical analysis of various materials, contributed to the theory and practice of extraction separation of metal ions, developed methods of chemical analysis in the flow, suggested a large number of new reagents for the analysis and separation of mixtures. He introduced the concept of so-called hybrid methods of analysis (1975), created a series of simple tools to determine the chemical composition of water, food, etc. (1990-1998 gg.).
For his work on the analysis of ultrapure substances in 1972 Yu.A.Zolotovu was awarded the State Prize of the USSR, in 1991 - the Russian State Prize (for his work on ion chromatography) and im.Chugaeva Prize of the Russian Academy of Sciences. Decorated with state orders and medals, including the Order of Red Banner of Labor, Friendship, "Honor", as well as the Gold Medal im.Mendeleeva (1993, for his work on the extraction of metals), the medal im.F.Emiha (1990 , Austria), im.Ya.E.Purkine medal (1973, Czechoslovakia). He is Doctor of Chemical Sciences, an honorary doctor of the University of Kiev, honorary member of the Japan Society of Analytical Chemistry (1991) and Romania (1996).
