Vladimir was born on April 1, 1951. He graduated from Leningrad Polytechnic Institute (LPI) in 1974 in the specialty "Thermal Physics". Until 1978, he studied at the graduate school LPI and defended his thesis in 1980. From 1978 to 1983 he worked in the Stavropol Polytechnic Institute, occupying the post of senior researcher, lecturer, associate professor.
Since 1983, he went to work at the Leningrad Institute of Fine Mechanics and Optics. Here in 1989 he successfully defended his doctoral thesis in the field "optics", "thermal physics and molecular physics." In 1990 he was awarded the degree of Doctor of Technical Sciences, in 1992 he was awarded the title of professor in the department of computer technology systems.
He is currently the rector of the St. Petersburg gosudarstvennogoinstituta Fine Mechanics and Optics (University ITMO).
His wife, Lydia B. Vasilyev, born in 1952, works deputy. director of the agency of international projects and programs.

The scientific work of VN Vasilyeva related to two main directions:
mathematical modeling and implementation of technological processes of manufacturing of fiber optic data transmission systems;
develop the principles and the creation of global telecommunication systems.
As a result of work in the first direction, it has been proposed and implemented new technological processes for the production of optical fiber, including a control system with fundamentally new sensors and devices. Methods have been developed to allow to increase the reproducibility of the fiber-optic communication lines.
The content of the work of the second direction is connected with the data transmission in computer systems, the global Internet network. A new approach and principles of the global Internet in Russia. The modeling and implemented development Internet network topology based on hierarchical scheme. Developed a flexible interface channel and computer levels of global networks, management and protection for the poor quality of the channel telecommunications infrastructure. A remote monitoring stations of satellite communications. These tasks allowed in a short time to create the largest scientific and educational computer network in Russia - RUNNet.
With the active participation of VN Vasilyeva developed the concept of building a network and program RUNNet, the basic principles and achieved the realization of the federal university network. On the basis of the Republican Scientific Center of Higher School of computer telecommunications networks (Vuztelekomtsentr) organized and satellite network segment RUNNet, which provides international connectivity to Europe`s largest academic service provider - Nordunet network.
VN Vasiliev is one of the creators of their own information resources of Russian higher schools and the construction of a single scientific and educational information space of Russia. Currently RUNNet network is the largest scientific and educational computer network in Russia, with more than 30 federal units, located in the largest cities of Russia and provides full connectivity with other networks.
On his initiative and under his leadership the new management system and maintenance of satellite communication have been developed by local and global networks and put into action network. He - the author of over 130 scientific publications, including 14 patents and inventions. He has made a great contribution to the development of international cooperation in the field of computer networks, as a permanent member of international society and international working groups. He has organized international and national conferences, seminars and workshops on computer networks, telematics and mathematical modeling.
Professor VN Vasiliev is an active teaching career. He - one of the initiators of the comprehensive training of gifted students in the exact sciences. Preparation of highly skilled engineers and scientists in the field of computer technology, optoelektronniki, laser technology and laser technology, instrument systems and computerized control systems is the aim of the special education project, conducted at the University.
On his initiative at the University in 1991 he established the Department of Computer Technology. The department trains specialists in the field of applied mathematics and computer science. With his participation, designed and prepared the training plans and programs for training, published a number of textbooks. Students of the department have repeatedly programming champions Russia, winners of the European and international Olympiads in Informatics. In 2000, a team of students of the department won the silver medal in the Programming World Cup finals.
