Born April 17, 1933, in Moscow, on Arbat. His father, Leonid Velikzhanina was TASS photojournalist from 1930 to 1968, he worked as a photojournalist in the Great Patriotic War - from June 27, 1941 and until the liberation of Prague and Vienna in May 1945, has won many awards. Father Victor, Andrew M. Velikzhanina, owned a photo studio in Novosibirsk since 1890.
After high school, I wanted to learn to VGIK, but at the insistence of his father abandoned the idea and entered the Moscow Power Engineering Institute. Victor began to help his father in the work of photojournalists went on courses where professors taught VGIK A few years later: Lydia Dyko, Yevsei Iofis, Ph.D. Sholom German sculptor and academician Yuri Chernov. After graduation he was assigned to the closed state in Moscow.
After the death of his father went to work for TASS, he enrolled at MSU graduate. 1974 - the beginning of work in professional photography.
In 1987, he became one of hundred photographers selected to work on the American project "A day in the life of the Soviet Union." The project involved 40 American photographers, 10 European and 30 - from the Soviet Union.
In 2003, there was an exhibition of works of Victor Leonidovich "creative elite at the turn of the century" in the State Tretyakov Gallery. At the end of the exhibition, Victor has been awarded to the Russian President`s grant for the publication of the photo album "Creative elite at the turn of the centuries."
In September 2007, he took part in the "One Day in Latvia. 20 years later".
