French historian and leader of education, who made a contribution to the development of modern French educational system. Born in Paris on 11 September 1811, he studied history under the leadership of Zh.Mishle. In the future, he was a professor of history at the University of Reims and Paris, became famous thanks to the work on history. One of them - the history of the Romans (Histoire des Romains, 1844) attracted the attention of Napoleon III, who expressed his desire to meet with the author and, in spite of the last republican views, began to advance its positions of responsibility in education. In 1863-1869 Durut was Minister of Education and obtained the introduction of schools teaching the history and philosophy of the organization and laboratories; establishment of secular schools for girls; enhance the status and pay for teachers; adopting a program of building new schools to small communities; the further development of university autonomy. Durut was senator in 1869-1871, resigned after the fall of the empire. In 1884 he became a member of the French Academy.
Also it has been widely used textbooks, published Durut significantly revised and expanded edition of Stories of the Romans from ancient times to the death of Theodosius (Histoire des Romains depuis les temps les plus recul s jusqu` la mort de Th odose, tt 7, 1883 -. 1886), History Greeks (Histoire des Grecs, tt 3, 1886 -. 1891), and popular books on the history of the Jews, the Greeks, the Romans, as well as the history of France, modern Europe and the Middle ages. Durut died in Paris on November 25, 1894.
