I prepared and issued a monograph of the same name (Yakutsk, 1982, 128 pp.) Thesis in the form of a scientific report on the degree of Doctor of philological sciences defended in Ulan-Ude on "storytelling in a system of folk traditions of the people saha" (1997).
Since 1995 he has been working at the faculty of the Yakut philology and culture of the Yakut State University. MK Ammosova. In 2003 he was elected dean of the faculty.
The main focus of research activities is Storytelling - one of the key problems of the world of folklore, oral tradition Yakut olonkhosuts. Vasily the first in the country began to use technical means of fixing the monuments of folklore Sakha people. Scientific work on the collection and publication of folklore monuments VV Illarionov combines with practical activities for the revival and development of the Yakut folklore, the traditional culture of the Sakha people. It is one of the initiators of the Yakut national holiday Ysyakh, permanent chairman of the Republican contest osuokhay.
For Professor VV Illarionov is characterized by an active vital position. He maintains an active public work in the country, is a member of the editorial boards of academic series "Monuments of Folklore of the Peoples of Siberia and the Far East," the Republican Series "Sakha booturdara", "VestnikYaGU" scientific publication.
Vasily adequately represents the Russian science abroad, lectured at international conferences of folklore in Turkey, Kyrgyzstan, Kazakhstan, took part in the II International Congress of Turkicology "Modern Turkology: Theory, Practice and Prospects" (6-9 November 2004). Elected board member of the International Association of Turkic studies, is a member of the editorial board of the International Journal "Turkic". V.V.Illarionov took the most active part of an application for the Yakut heroic epos olonkho UNESCO, as a result of which, olonkho proclaimed a masterpiece of world spiritual culture.
In 2005, the winner of the contest "The Best Head of the Department" among the faculty of the Yakut State University.
Awarded the "Excellence in Culture of the Republic of Sakha (Yakutia)", medal of the Academy of Sciences of the Republic of Sakha (Yakutia) for the development of science in the country. Awarded the honorary title "Honored Worker of Science of the Republic of Sakha (Yakutia)."
