Born July 12, 1935 in the village of Snitin Poltava region of the Ukrainian SSR. In 1956 he graduated from the Kiev Institute of Finance and Economics, and then worked in various financial and planning authorities of Zaporizhzhya region. In 1975, Vadim Hetman was appointed first deputy head of the Ukrainian SSR on the cost of the State Committee. In 1987 he became head of the Board of the Agro-Industrial Bank of USSR (since 1990 - the Bank "Ukraine"). In this position Vadim Getman stayed until March 1992 when he was elected head of the National Bank of Ukraine. Delve into the creation of Ukrainian mezhbankovoy Currency Exchange (Interbank Currency Exchange), the head of which he became in 1993, Vadim Hetman left in January 1993 his old post. He was succeeded by Viktor Yushchenko. On the post of head of the exchange committees UICE Vadim Hetman remained until his assassination in April 1998.

In the early 1990s, Vadim Getman has been actively involved in politics. In 1990 he was elected deputy of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine of Uman (number 425) single-member constituency (90.10% of the vote in the second round). Then Vadim Hetman was still a member of the Communist Party.

In the parliamentary elections in March 1994, Vadim Hetman for the second time he was elected a deputy of the Verkhovna Rada, this time as a non-partisan by Talne (number 426) single-member constituency (50.97% of the votes in the first round).

In 1997, Vadim Hetman Award "Parliamentarian of 1996" was awarded.

In the parliamentary elections in March 1998, Vadim Hetman again ran for MP from the single-mandate constituency
