Veblen, Thorstein Bunde (Veblen, Thorstein Bunde) (1857-1929), American economist. Born in Kato (Wis.) July 30, 1857 in a family of Norwegian immigrants. He graduated from Carleton College in Northfield (Minn.), Engaged in teaching, he entered the University Johns Hopkins. Unable to get a scholarship, he went to Yale University, where he obtained in 1884 his doctorate for his thesis The ethical foundation of the doctrine of retribution (Ethical Grounds of a Doctrine of Retribution).
