Ted Allen grew up in Carmel, Indiana ; it was his mother instilled in his son a love of food and cooking. Currently, Ted lives in Brooklyn, New York with longtime partner Barry Rice, professor of Chicago Columbia College. At Purdue University, Allen received a degree in psychology in 1987, later becoming a member of the school management Krannert Graduate. However, he quit his job to take up another position - the literary editor of the newspaper "Journal and Courier" in the city of Lafayette, Indiana. Still later, he became a master of arts in journalism in scientificEnvironmental Reporting program at New York University. Ted moved to Chicago, where he once worked as a reporter of the weekly newspaper "Lerner Newspapers". Allen became a prominent figure in 2003, when he came to reality-Show "Queer Eye for the Straight Guy" as a ` connoisseur of wine and food. " He still participates in TV programs as a gourmet, often acting as a guest judge on American show "Iron Chef America" on the channel `Food Network`. Ted became the leading documentary in six parts, "Uncorked: Wine Made Simple",on PBS, which show began May 7, 2007.
On 13 June 2007, Allen became a regular guest judge in season 3 and 4 show the reality show "Top Chef" on cable channel `Bravo`, in the previous two seasons periodically already participating in the status of judges. His new show, "Food Detectives", debuted July 29, 2008 on channel `Food Network `.
In 2001, Ted was nominated for the prestigious `National Magazine Award` for his article about breast cancer in "Esquire" magazine.
