Ted Allen grew up in Carmel, Indiana ; it was his mother instilled in his son a love of food and cooking. Currently, Ted lives in Brooklyn, New York with longtime partner Barry Rice, professor of Chicago Columbia College. At Purdue University, Allen received a degree in psychology in 1987, later becoming a member of the school management Krannert Graduate. However, he quit his job to take up another position - the literary editor of the newspaper "Journal and Courier" in the city of Lafayette, Indiana. Still later, he became a master of arts in journalism in scientificEnvironmental Reporting program at New York University. Ted moved to Chicago, where he once worked as a reporter of the weekly newspaper "Lerner Newspapers". His start in oblastikulinarnoy criticism he received, becoming a member of the team "The Famished Four" with his boyfriend Barry Rice.

Allen was a freelancer "Chicago" magazine ,eventually becoming its editor in chief. He often wrote about food, wine and luminaries of the culinary world. He moved to the "Esquire" magazine in 1997 as a promotional editor, contributing to a series of articles about nutrition, is advocating talks with stars and co-wrote a popular series of magazine articles ,called "Things a Man Should Know". These articles have become a kind of guide for men in matters of fashion, business etiquette, sex and cocktails. Ted has written many articles for various magazines, remaining the person who brought an invaluable contribution as an editor in "Esuire" magazine.

Allen became a prominent figure in 2003, when he came to reality-Show "Queer Eye for the Straight Guy" as a ` connoisseur of wine and food. " He still participates in TV programs as a gourmet, often acting as a guest judge on American show "Iron Chef America" on the channel `Food Network`. Ted became the leading documentary in six parts, "Uncorked: Wine Made Simple",on PBS, which show began May 7, 2007.

On 13 June 2007, Allen became a regular guest judge in season 3 and 4 show the reality show "Top Chef" on cable channel `Bravo`, in the previous two seasons periodically already participating in the status of judges. His new show, "Food Detectives", debuted July 29, 2008 on channel `Food Network `.

In 2001, Ted was nominated for the prestigious `National Magazine Award` for his article about breast cancer in "Esquire" magazine. He contributed to a series of articles about the food (again for "Esquire"), which became a finalist for `National Magazine Award` in 2003. In 2004 realiti-show "Queer Eye" won the award Emmy as " Outstanding Reality Program" by the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences in 2005, received a nomination in the same category again.

Ted Allen interviewed luminaries such interesting food, like Battles Mario, Martha Stewart, Trotter, Rick Tramonto, Gale Gend, Rick Bayless and Paul Bocuse. Ted also led his column on wine and alcohol, called "In the Spirit: The Intelligent Barfly", for the website `Women.com.
