Background

Born December 12, 1838 at Thetford (pcs. Of Vermont). He Graduated Tetfordskuyu Academy and moved to Chicago to become a court reporter. However, the love of astronomy took her: Chicago Burnham created his own observatory, equipped with a 15-cm telescope, and has gained international fame as an observer of double stars. His observations he held for 12 years (1870-1882) and then joined the staff of Lick Observatory on Mount Hamilton (Calif.). In 1893-1913 he worked in Yerkes Observatory, University of Chicago in Williams Bay (Wisconsin)., From 1893 - professor of practical astronomy, University of Chicago. In 1874, Burnham was elected to the Royal Astronomical Society, and in 1894 was awarded the Gold Medal of the Society for the discovery and study of binary stars. In 1904 he received the award.
