In 1974 he graduated from the Economics Faculty of Moscow State University. Lomonosov. In 1979 he defended his thesis on "The Role and Place of Transnational Corporations in US foreign policy." In 1989 he defended his doctoral thesis on the topic "The Role and Place of Western Europe to the US strategy toward the Soviet Union (1945-1988)."

The scientific activity

From 1974 to 1977 he trained at the Mission of the USSR to the United Nations. From 1978 to 1988 he worked in the USA and Canada Institute of the USSR Academy of Sciences as a junior, then senior researcher, head of the sector. Since 1988 works in the European Institute of the USSR Academy of Sciences (RAS), since 1989 - Deputy Director.

Research interests - foreign and military policy of the USSR / Russia, the interaction between Russia and the West in the political, economic and security areas. Global politics. International integration. Globalization. The US and UK.

Teaching - lectures in various Russian and foreign universities and research institutes. During the 1991 spring semester - honorary Chair of them. BA Rolling in the University of Groningen. Since 2002 - Head of the Department of World Politics of the State University - Higher School of Economics (HSE). Since 2006 - Dean of the Faculty of World Economy and International politikiGU School of Economics.

Author and editor of 17 books and pamphlets, published more than 250 articles on economics, foreign policy, arms control, national security strategy, Russian foreign and defense policy. Articles and books published in Russia, USA, Germany, France, Great Britain, the Netherlands, Finland, Denmark, Greece and other countries. (About 30 countries).

Public and state activity

In 1989-1991 - official expert of the Committee on International Relations of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR. Since 1991 - member of the Council on Foreign Relations Foreign Ministry.

Since 1992 - deputy chairman, since 1994 - Chairman of the Presidium of the Foreign and Defense Policy Council - a public organization, brings together more than 150 prominent members of the business community and the media, leading politicians, heads of power structures.

In 1993-1999 - member of the Presidential Council. Since 1993 - Member of the Scientific Advisory Council of the RF Security Council. Since 1996 - Member of the Advisory Council under the Chairman of the Federation Council. Since 1996 - co-chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Development Fund of parliamentarism in Russia. Member of the Board of Trustees of the Fund INDEM. Since 2001 - Advisor to the Deputy Head of the Presidential Administration`s foreign policy.

Since 2002 - the founder and chairman of the Editorial Board of "Russia in global politics". In November 2004, he was introduced to the Board of the Presidential Council on Civil Society Institutions and Human Rights.

Membership in international organizations

Since 1992 - the co-chairman of the Russian-Ukrainian Forum (regular meeting of representatives of economic and political elites of the two countries), now Public Business Council Russia-Ukraine. In 1994-1995 - the co-chairman (with O.Lambsdorf) Committee on Economic Development "Wider Europe" the Commission (Chirac Commission).

Since 1995 - Member of the International Advisory Committee (IAC) of the Council on Foreign Relations (New York), the main organization of US policy makers. ICC headed D.Rokfeller. Since 2004 - member of the Board of Trustees of the Alfred Herrhausen at Deutsche Bank. Member of the International Institute for Strategic Studies (London), and several other professional organizations and academic councils.
