`Puya` - Puerto Rican rock band from San Juan (San Juan, Puerto Rico),the capital and largest city of the country. The group consists of guitarist Ramon Ortiz (Ramon Ortiz), bassist Harold Hopkins (Harold Hopkins), drummer Eduardo Paniagua (Eduardo Paniagua) and vocalist Sergio Curbelo (Sergio Curbelo).
The band was formed in 1988 and was then called `Whisker Biscuit`,and he played only instrumental music. In 1992, the group entered the vocalist Sergio Curbelo and `Puya` moved to Fort Lauderdale, Florida (Fort Lauderdale, Florida), where with the help of musician Jeff Renz (Jeff Renza) and studio ` Noiz Boiz` developed and polished his unique style ,representing an unusual mix of salsa and heavy metal. In 1994 the group was renamed the `Puya` and released their first demo release. `Puya` became the first Puerto Rican rock band that has achieved considerable international success.
In 1995 the band released their self-titled debut album on the label `Noiz Boiz`.There musicians met with producer Gustavo Santaolalla (Gustavo Santaolalla), which helped them to sign a contract with `MCA Inc`. In 1999 the band released their second album, `Fundamental`, received good reviews in the press. This event prompted `Puya` on their way to glory, in the same year, they performed at the annual festival ` Ozzfest`.In 2000, their song `Tirale` hit the soundtrack of the animated film Heavy Metal ` 2` (Heavy Metal 2000) and was the only song in the collection with the text in Spanish. The group opened the concert of rock monsters as `Sepultura`,` Red Hot Chili Peppers`, `Pantera` and ` KISS`. They are also recorded in Spanish cavernouscomposition version of `Spirits in the Material World` group ` The Police`, that sounded like `Almas en un mundo material`. However, since the sale of the third album, `Union`, did not meet the expectations of ` MCA`, the label decided not to renew the contract with the group after it expired in 2002. Three years later, the band announced the breakup of the group. `Puya` teamed up in 2009 for the sake of appearances on two Puerto Rican music festivals. Their last concerts held on July 4, 2010 at the festival `Rock al Parque` in Bogota, Colombia, on September 25, 2010 in his native San Juan. In addition, August 27, 2010 they released their latest release, a digital EP `Areyto`, available for purchase on iTunes.
The musical style of the band, which had an impact on the group `Fania All-Stars`,` Journey`, `Foreigner`,` Kiss`, `REO Speedwagon`,` Slayer`, `Metallica`,` Black Sabbath`, `Van Halen` and `Sepultura`, includes elements of salsa, hard rock, heavy metal, Latin, rock, jazz and rap metal.
