Mordechai Vaanunu - Prisoner of Zion
Mordechai Vaanunu, 47 year-old technician, was sentenced to 18 years in prison for exposing Israel`s nuclear program. Today it is one of the most famous political prisoners in Israel and in the world.
He was born in the city of Marrakech, Morocco. He spent his childhood in the town of Dimona in the family of 13 souls. He first studied at the yeshiva and religious school and then studied geography, physics and philosophy at the universities of Tel Aviv and Be`er Sheva. During his studies, he was a student activist and pacifist movement.
In 1986, after coming to the conclusion that the nuclear reactor in Dimona is a danger to the inhabitants of Israel and the neighboring countries, he told the British newspaper "Sunday Times" on the production of nuclear weapons in Dimona. Vaanunu argued that "the reactor in Dimona is the second Auschwitz for the residents of Israel and the neighboring countries." In consequence of this revelatory publications, he was kidnapped by Mossad agents in Italy and brought to Israel on the personal instructions of then Prime Minister Shimon Peres. The trial was held behind closed doors and details, and made public until 1999. Vaanunu was sentenced to 18 years in prison for espionage. (In favor of whom?) He had already served eleven and a half years alone in a cell three meters by four meters. During his imprisonment, he has repeatedly been subjected to harassment and restrictions that continue to this day. Pardon Commission decided not to reduce his sentence by a third for good behavior. Today, it remains still serve three years in prison. (The term includes pre-judgment). After his prison osvobozhdeniyaiz Vaanunu hopes to leave Israel.
Mordechai Vaanunu is the winner of the alternative Nobel Prize Peace Prize, and multiple candidate for the Nobel Prize (including this year).
Vaanunu certainly is the best type of the Jewish character. He sacrificed his serene life and liberty in the name of establishing the truth. He believes in peace between Israel and the Arab countries, in favor of an unconditional Israeli withdrawal from all the occupied territories and for the recognition of the rights of the Palestinian people.
