The band has always professed blues-rock with a dash of country music and rock`n`roll. While still in high school in the Florida city of Jacksonville Ronnie Van Zant (vocals) , Allen Collins (guitar) , and Gary Rossington (guitar) founded the project "My Backyard".A few months later they were joined by bassist Leon Vilkson and keyboardist Billy Powell, and the team changed the sign to "Lynyrd Skynyrd", named after the former teacher Leonard Skinner guys.
Taking to his company drummer Bob Burns, the band went on tour in the US south. At first, "Lynyrd Skynyrd" did not enjoy much success, but in 1972, on one of the club concerts team noticed producer Al Kooper, inviting guys to sign a contract with the "MCA". He took to produce their debut album, "Pronounced Leh-Nerd Skin-Nerd", released in 1973. By the way before the album recording in the team has another guitarist Ed King.
Powerful guitar trio gave the band its signature sound and the first hit of the composition was the song "Free Bird", is still popular in the radio. This hit ,as well as the performance of "Lynyrd Skynyrd" opening act "Who" during their tour "Quadrophenia" helped take the second album 12 in the charts and eventually reach the status -area.
At the end of 1974 Burns on drums replaced Artimus Pyle, and shortly afterwards left the band, Ed King. The next release of the updated composition "Nuthin` Fancy" entered the top ten US number. Record 1976 "Gimme Back My Bullets", released with producer Tom Daud, though sold well, but was less successful than the previous two albums. "Lynyrd Skynyrd" decided to restore its reputation with the help of intensive touring ,which resulted in a double live album "One More from the Road". At the time of its release in the band has a new guitarist Steve Gaines and three backing vocalists. Updated team did their best and " live " was back in the top ten. In October 1977, he appeared on the shelves of the new album "Street Survivors".Three days later, the tragedy occurred after its release : the plane on which the musicians depart, crashed. As a result, Ronnie Van Zant, Steve Gaines, his sister Cassie, one of the backing singers were killed, others were injured. Against the background of this event "Street Survivors" bought up huge numbers.
The very same group was disbanded ,and the remaining band in 1978 released a compilation of early material "Skynyrd`s First. .. and Last". In 1980, Rossington and Collins put together their new group. Two years later, Pyle organized "Artimus Pyle Band". In 1986, Collins was in a car accident, as a result was paralyzed, and died four years later. In 1987, Rossington, Powell, King and Vilkson decided to revive "Lynyrd Skynyrd", inviting to his vocalist Johnny Van Zant and guitarist Randall Hall. The band toured America and released in 1988, the live album "Southern by the Grace of God". For studio work team began only in 1991. During the 90-x "Lynyrd Skynyrd" toured frequently, occasionally releasing albums. In the same period, the team often changed drummers, but it does not affect the sound of the band.
In the mid-90s in the band were invited guitarist Ricky Medlock and Hugh Thomasson. In 1997, the drummer came Michael Charlton, suspending churn drummers. Updated team signed a contract with "CMC International", releasing "Twenty" disk on the label.
