Luis Aponte Martinez was born in the town of Laas, Diocese Ponsa, Puerto Rico. Syn Evangelista Santiago Aponte and Rozy Maria Martines. He`s from a large family, and his glubokaa Religious naboznost? has been evident with rannego childhood. A ego parents ,and brothers were faithful Catholics and Aponte Martinez served for many years as a novice in the parish church of the city. This experience was partly the inspiration that motivated him to take on the vocation of the priesthood.
He studied at the Seminary of San Juan in Puerto Rico ; hence he arrived in Boston, Massachusetts ,where he studied at St. John`s Seminary. He attended Boston University and received his doctorate from St. Leon Seminary in Florida.
The priest and the bishop
Aponte Martinez was ordained a Catholic priest in San Germain, Puerto Rico, April 10, 1950. Ordination makes James Edward McManus, Bishop Ponsa. Between 1950 and 1960, he was the head of the Catholic diocese Pons schools, diocesan secretary and chancellor of the Pontifical Catholic University of Puerto Rico. He also served as chaplain to the Puerto Rican National Guard.
October 12, 1960, Aponte Martinez became the second Puerto Rican, which was dedicated to the bishop ,being appointed Auxiliary Bishop of Ponce, Puerto Rico, by Pope John XXIII. The first Puerto Rican, who has held this post was Juan Alejo de Arizmendi. Ordination committed on October 12, 1960, Cardinal Francis Spellman - Archbishop of New York, assisted by James Peter Davis - Archbishop of SanJoan and Edward John Harper - Titular Bishop Eraklei. April 16, 1963 he was appointed Coadjutor Bishop Pons, and November 18, 1963 succeeded him as bishop Ponsa. 4 November 1964goda, Aponte Martinez became archbishop of San Juan, on the recommendation of Cardinal Francis Spellman of New York.

" He served as Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Puerto Rico Catholic University. Aponte Martinez was chairman of the Episcopal Conference of Puerto Rico. ,and chairman of the Latin American Episcopal Conference.
Cardinal Aponte Martinez was the cardinal electors in the two conclaves in 1978.
In 1984, Aponte Martinez helped coordinate the visit and was among the many dignitaries who welcomed Pope John Paul II, the visit by His Holiness after Puerto Rico. Cardinal Aponte Martinez was actively involved in the acquisition of some major church in Puerto Rico. Among them were TV and radio, as well as a weekly newspaper called "El Visitante" (Visitor). It`s all served, in order to spread the point of view of the church on the island. Cardinal Aponte Martinez retired from his post as Archbishop of San Juan 26 March 1999. He participated in the preparations for the papal conclave of 2005, but has lost the right to vote, since he was already in `82.
In 2006, he published his memoirs, Unde hoc mihi.In 2011, the Cardinal `s name hit the headlines for his comments after both admitted their homosexuality Puerto Rican singer Ricky Martin.
Health, death and funeral of Cardinal
In October of the same year, his health seriously deteriorated, and it was necessary to subject it to numerous hospitalizations. April 1, 2012 it became known that the state of the Cardinal continued to deteriorate, and the Cardinal stated that doctors asked that no extraordinary means to sustain his life had not been used.
Cardinal Luis Aponte Martinez, died on 10 April 2012, at 4 am, cardiovascular and renal complications ,Hospital "Auxilio Mutuo", in the area of Hato Rey, San Juan, in the 62 th anniversary of his ordination to the priesthood. The Governor of Puerto Rico Luis Fortuno announced a five-day national mourning over the death of the cardinal, and the mayor of San Juan, Jorge Santini, also decided on a five-day mourning in the capital. Religious leaders PuertoPuerto Rico expressed their condolences on the death of the cardinal, and prayed for him and his family. Mass with the seven cardinal was celebrated at 7:30 pm on the same day in the Cathedral of the Archdiocese of San Juan Archbishop Roberto Gonzalez Nieves, OFM. On Wednesday, April 11, the body was delivered to Cardinal Lajas, where he was born ,where Mass was celebrated in the parish church of Nuestra Senora de la Candelaria, at 7:30 pm, the Bishop of Mayaguez Corrado Alvaro del Rio, SJ. On Thursday, April 12 the body was moved to San German, where the cardinal was ordained a priest, and the Mass was celebrated at 11:00 am on Friday, April 13the body of the late cardinal will be in the Cathedral of Ponce. On Saturday, April 14 in the morning, parting begins in the church of Santa Teresita and will continue on Sunday at 5:00 pm, after the daily Mass. On Monday morning, 16 April, the body was taken to the Cathedral of San Juan in Old San Juan,where it was before 3:00 pm, and then served a requiem Mass will be led by Cardinal Carlos Amigo Vallejo, OFM, former Archbishop of Seville, Spain. Next, the late Cardinal was buried in the cathedral.
