Background

By profession electrician. In 1960 he joined the African Party for the Independence of Guinea and Cape Verde Amilcar Cabral, who led a guerrilla struggle for the independence of these countries, from Portugal, and quickly became one of its leaders by the guerrilla nickname Nino. After the proclamation of independence in 1973 Vieira became the chairman of the National People`s Assembly, the then Prime Minister. In 1980, the economic problems have led to the fact that Vieira made a bloodless coup overthrew the government and the country`s first head of Luis de Almeida Cabral. Vieira was one of the nine members of the military government and its chairman. In 1984 there was a transition to civilian rule, and was restored the former communist regime PAIGC, Vieira and became head of state. In 1991 it was allowed the opposition political parties, and in 1994 held multiparty elections, in which Vieira in the second round was elected president and 29 September 1994 was the first democratic President of Guinea-Bissau. In 1998, re-elected Chairman of PAIGC.

In the same year there was a conflict between Vieira and dismissed them army commander Ansumane Mans. The Civil War, however, soon a peace agreement was signed and a transitional government is formed. But November 27, 1998 the parliament to impeach Vieira. Civil war broke out again. In May 1999, Vieira forces surrendered, and he fled to Portugal. In September, he was expelled from the PAIGC.

After the result of a new military coup in 2003 overthrew president Kumba Yala, Vieira in 2005 he announced his candidacy in the presidential election as an independent candidate and won in the second round.
