After graduating in 1930 from the Moscow experimental demonstration commune school named Lepeshinskii chemical gradient, IB Zbarskii worked as a laboratory assistant in the physical and chemical laboratory of the Institute of Health Resort the Ministry of Health, where he studied chemical analysis of mineral water. In 1931 he joined the Zoological Department of the name of the Moscow State University, MN Pokrovsky (Department of Animal Physiology), graduating in 1935.
Since 1934, IB Zbarskii worked in the laboratory at the Mausoleum of VI Lenin first as an assistant, and from 1939 to 1952 - senior researcher.
In 1936-1946 years - at the Department of Biological and Analytical Chemistry of the 1st Moscow Medical Institute: PhD student, assistant, senior lecturer. Teaching biology and analytical chemistry IB Zbarskii combined with research work in the field of biochemistry.
In 1945, the IB Zbarskii worked as a senior researcher, and from 1946 to 1960 - head of the biochemical laboratory of the National Cancer Institute named after PA Herzen, conducted research in the field of biochemistry and tumor cell biochemistry.
Since 1956, Ilya Borisovich works at the Institute named after AN animal morphology Severtsova USSR Academy of Sciences (since 1967 - Institute of Biology named after NK Koltsov RAS): a senior research fellow (1956-1960), head of the Laboratory of Biochemistry (1961-1989), in 1989 - Advisor to the Directorate of the Institute.
In the years 1942-1944 IB Zbarskii concurrently headed the Department estestvoznaniyaTyumenskogo Pedagogical Institute and the Department of General Chemistry of the Kuban Medical Institute in Tyumen. In the years 1962-1964 as part-time was the head of the Laboratory of Biochemistry, Institute of Medical Radiology in Obninsk, where he conducted research in the field of radiation biochemistry cells; in 1964-1967 years - Head of the Department of Medical Biochemistry of the Central Institute of Advanced Medical Studies in Moscow, where he organized courses on improvement of medical school biochemistry teachers.
Main area of ??research IB Zbarsky - work in the field of biochemistry, cellular structures, biochemistry of nucleic acids and proteins, developmental biology and biochemistry of the tumors.
By studying the amino acid composition of total proteins of a number of organs of normal and malignant human tumors, IB Zbarskii noted similarities in the tumors of different histogenesis with significant differences in the composition of proteins corresponding to normal organs. In determining gistidazy - enzyme, typical of the liver, hepatomas revealed a sharp decline in its activity, up to the disappearance. The results of these studies allowed us to formulate a common pattern of similarity of composition and metabolism of various tumors and their significant differences from the original tissue.
In 1940 IB Zbarskii developed a method of obtaining cell nuclei of liver tumors and other organs, instead of using a citrate buffer of citric acid in a neutral medium. This allowed the fractionated cell nucleus into the nuclear sap, deoxyribonucleoproteins extractable 1-2M sodium chloride solution, and the nuclear residue, consisting of non-histone proteins. Studying this balance, IB Zbarskii first described non-histone proteins of the cell nucleus and the structure identified, later called the nuclear matrix, which in 1988 was recorded as the opening number 348.
In the laboratory headed by IB Zbarskii managed nuclear RNA fractionated into two fractions - proper for the nucleotide composition of total RNA and DNA-like, with the latter synthesized much faster. Both of these studies were the forerunners of identifying messenger RNA encoding the proteins and subsequently identified. Further, in the silkworm gland shelkootdelitelnoy combining methods of autoradiography and analysis of nucleic acids, it was shown that it messenger RNA is synthesized early in the fifth age predating synthesis of fibroin. It builds up and stably maintained, as a template for synthesis of the protein.
Continuing research on nucleic acids, the most significant was the isolation and identification of DNA associated with the nucleolus. It was possible to isolate a preparation of DNA and determine its nucleotide composition, which proved to be dramatically enriched GC nucleotides, ie, It is the matrix for the biosynthesis of ribosomal RNA.
IB Zbarskii published more than 400 scientific reports on the biochemistry of the cell, protein and nucleic exchange, biochemistry of cancer, biochemistry of the cell nucleus and some specific issues, including 3 monographs, 2 workshops and 60 surveillance and theoretical articles. Monograph: "The chemistry and biochemistry of nucleic acids" (with SS Debovym et al., 1968), "The organization of the cell nucleus" (1988), "The skeletal structure of the nucleus of the cell" (jointly with S. Kuzmina, 1991) . Besides Ilya Borisovich is the author of 66 articles in encyclopedias, 70 popular scientific articles and reviews, 4 books. With his advice and under his leadership, defended 15 doctoral and 40 master`s theses.
In 1966, the IB Zbarskii organized in Moscow on the first All-Union Symposium on the structure and function of the cell nucleus. In the future, these workshops were regularly held in different cities of the Soviet Union. In 1970, Ilya Borisovich held an international symposium on the same subject with the participation of eminent scientists from the USSR, USA, England, Germany, France, Italy, Netherlands, Norway, Japan, Yugoslavia, Belgium, Bulgaria.
For many years IB Zbarskii was a member of the Organizing Committee and participated in workshops on the European nucleolus (and subsequently the cell nucleus). In 1989 he organized the 11th meeting (11-th Nuclear Workshop) in Suzdal.
In the years 1970-1989 IB Zbarskii served as chairman of the Soviet of the biology of the Group during the Soviet-Finnish commission on scientific and technical cooperation.
At various times, Ilya Borisovich was a member of the editorial boards of national journals "The successes of modern biology", "Problems of Medical Chemistry", "Bulletin of Experimental Biology and Medicine" and international periodicals "Subcellular Biochemistry", "European Journal of Cell Biology" and "Cell Research" .
In 1963, the IB Zbarskii elected a corresponding member in 1986 - a full member of the USSR Academy of Medical Sciences (RAMS). In 1956, Ilya Borisovich elected a member of the Biochemical Society of the USSR, from 1956 to 1962 - Scientific Secretary of the Presidium. Since 2001 he is a member of the Presidium of the Society of Cell Biology. Doctor of Biological Sciences, Professor.
In 1950 IB Zbarskii was first scientific secretary and then deputy editor of Chemistry large medical encyclopedia.
IB Zbarskii awarded the Order of Red Banner of Labor (1944), Friendship of Peoples (1983), "Badge of Honor" (1939), medals "For Victory over Germany" (1945), "For Valiant Labor in the Great Patriotic War" (1947), the Bulgarian silver medal "For science and art" (1950).
