Born in Delft (Holland) in an old, respected family of 10 April 1583. As a child, he differed amazing abilities. In fifteen years, the French court struck intelligence and erudition; King Henry IV called him "Dutch miracle". With eleven years Grotius studied classical literature and philosophy at the University of Leiden; University of Orleans in 1599 awarded him the degree of Doctor of Laws. Admitted to practice law in 16 years, he never practiced it. In 1607-1613 he held a responsible post of general treasurer of the provinces Holland, Zeeland and Friesland, and then was pensionariem in Rotterdam city council. He was involved in a confrontation orthodox Calvinists and the Protestant dissidents. At the grand pensionary Oldenbarneveltom Jan and two other activists were detained in 1618 and sentenced to life imprisonment.
In 1621 Grotius and his wife, Maria van Regersberg, the mayor`s daughter Vera, escaped from the fortress L
