Hermann Cohen was born in the town of Coswig, part of the district of Wittenberg in the federal state of Anhalt in Germany. He graduated from the school in Dessau and the Jewish Theological Seminary in Breslau, the capital of Silesia (Breslau, Wroclaw). After graduating from the seminary he continued his studies at the University of Breslau, Berlin and Halle.
In 1871 he wrote the work "Kant`s Theory of Experience", which attracted the attention of professors of philosophy in Marburg Friedrich Albert Lange, and at his invitation Cohen moved to Marburg.
In 1873, Cohen defended his doctoral thesis, becoming a lecturer Faculty of Philosophy of the University of Marburg, and devotes himself to the study of the philosophical heritage of Kant.
