Gennady Karponossov first ride in a pair with Elena Zharkova. This couple was among the first students young coach Tatiana Tarasova. However, the greatest success achieved by Gennady second partner, Natalia Linichuk.
Linichuk and Karponosov trained Elena Tchaikovsky and played for the club "Dynamo-Moscow". His first medal at senior level they received in 1974. At the Olympics of 1976, when the ice dancing was introduced into the program of the Olympic Winter Games, they became the fourth. Further, their success continued and they became world champions in 1978 and 1979.

Natalia Linichuk and Gennady Karponosov became successful coaches in ice dancing. They work on the rink at the University of Delaware, USA. The coaching duo of Gennady is responsible for the compulsory dances, and Natalia - for the original dance and the free program.
