Hendrik Gerard (Gert) Hofstede (Gerard Hendrik (Geert) Hofstede) was born in 1928 in Haarlem, The Netherlands (Haarlem, The Netherlands). He attended school in The Hague (The Hague) and Apeldoorn (Apeldoorn).
In 1953, Gerard graduated from Delft University of Technology (Delft Technical University) with a degree of Master of Science in mechanical engineering. Having worked in industry for ten years, Hofstede joined the doctoral program at the University of Groningen (Groningen University). He received his PhD in Social Psychology in 1967. His thesis covered the topic of budgetary control.
At the end of Delft University Gert he joined the Dutch military ranks, where he worked as a technical officer and remained there for two years. From 1955 on, he became a factory worker in Amsterdam (Amsterdam). After 1965 Hofstede settled at IBM Corporation, where he prepared for future managers and was manager (scientific staff) HR.
