Flemish Jesuit neo-Latin poet, physician, mentor of Spinoza. Together with his brother participated actively in the art trade. In 1645 he opened an art studio, which soon went bankrupt. Then he opened a Latin school, which became one of the disciples of Spinoza. In 1671 he moved to Paris, where he opened another school. During his stay in France he spoke with Antoine Arnault and Gottfried Leibniz. He was involved in a plot against Louis XIV, but the conspirators were caught before they could carry out their plans. He was sentenced to death and hanged in front of the Bastille.
