Investigations related to solid-state physics, magnetism, low-temperature physics. In 1908 it found that the ratio of the thermal expansion coefficient of the metal to its specific heat is independent of temperature (Gruneisen law), in 1911 obtained a formula that relates the frequency of vibrations of the crystal lattice of atoms with the elastic constants of the crystal (Gruneisen formula). He gave a formula describing the dependence of the ideal part of the electrical resistivity of metals on the absolute temperature (Bloch formula - Gruneisen). It is one of the founders of the theory of solids developed (1919) a general theory of the crystalline state.
