In 1926-1931 there was a scientific mission in the United States, at Harvard Observatory (Harvard College Observatory). Since 1931, head of the department of astrophysics of the Pulkovo Observatory, and from 1933 to 1937 - its director. On charges of counter-revolutionary group Pulkovo astronomers ( "Pulkovo business") arrested on 28 June 1937 and shot 30 November 1937 . Rehabilitated posthumously (1956).
The main works are associated with the problems of nonstationary stars, their internal structure and evolution of stellar statistics, physics of the interstellar medium and planetary nebulae, the structure of stellar atmospheres, theoretical astronomy, solar physics. In 1927, together with V. Leuthen (WJ Luyten) defined distance of the Sun from the galactic plane. In 1928, together with D. Menzel (DH Mensel) performed pioneering work, browsing energy release processes of stars from the point of view of statistical mechanics. First among astronomers seriously considered the astronomical aspects of the cosmic rays. Details Be-studied stars. Engaged in the study of the Sun, he has participated in several expeditions to observe total solar eclipses.
