Kononov, ANDREY (1906-1986), Russian linguist-Turkologist. Born 14 (27) October 1906 in St. Petersburg. In 1930 he graduated from the Leningrad Oriental Institute. Since 1950 Professor of the Leningrad University, also worked at the Leningrad branch of the Institute of Oriental Studies of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR (in 1961-1963 as the head of the department). Academician since 1974. Honorary member of the Turkish Language Society, the Scientific Society of Orientalists of Hungary, the Hungarian Academy of Sciences. The author of many works on grammar, Turkish, Uzbek and other Turkic languages, the history of the Turkic languages, the history of Turkic Studies. He studied and published medieval Turkic monuments. He created a large scientific school. Kononov died in Leningrad, October 28, 1986.
