The son of a notary, was born and raised in the French colony of Reunion, he studied law in metropolitan France, first at Montpellier, then in the School of Law in Paris, where he graduated in 1888, earning a clerk during exercises at the art dealer.

Over the years he has quietly become a "Marshall-lover", and in 1893 Vollard bases its own art gallery Rue Laffitte, then became the center of the Parisian contemporary art market. There Vollard satisfied with his first major exhibition: for Manet and Gauguin others followed, the first posthumous exhibition of Van Gogh (4-30 June 1895), is organizing the first solo exhibition of Cezanne in 1904 - similar to Matisse. Thus, the Vollard "opens" these masters.

His appearance and manners often described ruthless words: "big, sharp, rude man" with "downcast eyes." However, he was quite furious businessman nazhivshim his fortune thanks to the motto "buy low - sell high." His clients included Gertrude Stein and her brother Leo, Sergei Shchukin and Ivan Morozov, Albert Burns (Albert C. Barnes), GO Hevemayer (HO Havemeyer). Later Vollard write the biography of Cezanne, Degas and Renoir.

Vollard died in a car crash in 1939 at the age of 73 years, when his chauffeur-driven car flew off the road. He died, leaving no direct heirs. His collection according to the will was distributed between distant relatives and close friends, although a significant number of important masterpieces were sold, lost or stolen during the war begins.

The relationship with the artists
